| LETTER TO A SKEPTICAL COLLEAGUE |
|
 |
|
Excerpted from a
letter to a skeptical colleague who told David: "I am very concrete.
Energy is too vague a concept for me." |
|
|
 |
|
"Let me spell out
some of the ways that an energy psychology practice differs from the kind of practice you
have been doing:
The procedures are more CONCRETE. No allusions to
"energy" are necessary except the measurable electrical impulses that are
sent to the brain during tapping or massaging specific points on
the skin. These points are known to have less electrical resistance than other
points on the skin (and they also have been shown to release more endorphins and
neurotransmitters when stimulated than other points). Specific points, in fact, send
impulses directly to areas of the brain that regulate fear, anger, pain, etc. One of
the big changes since I've been writing about energy work is that my language has become
very concrete, as has my understanding of the dynamics at play. This method does what
medication does, using gentle electrical impulses as the catalyst instead of psychoactive
chemicals, and without the side effects.
With this one tool, virtually any core belief, behavioral pattern, or
dysfunctional emotional response can be changed. The brain does not have a choice. It is
physiologically incompatible to have a stress response to certain images after tapping the
correct acupuncture points for several rounds
Every bit of clinical experience and good judgment you've earned over
the years is still relevant and essential. The art in this approach is not in the
tapping. That is easy to learn and do. It is in zeroing in on the issues to
neutralize, on the "top priority issues," those that have the most leverage for
impacting the desired changes. This requires all the clinical finesse you have
available. The difference is that once you zero in on the issues that are most
relevant, rather than having identified the topic for further discussion, you can readily
change the neurological patterning related to those issues.
That, in fact, is the part that feels like magic to me. The
magic is in having such a precise, powerful, non-invasive way to shift the brain
chemistry. This leads to profound changes in how you conduct your practice, but the
changes are commonsense. Why talk about the person's history for endless hours when
you can readily identify the core beliefs and kneejerk emotional reactions that are tied
to those experiences and transform them at a deep emotional/neurological level with a
relatively mechanical procedure. This does not, by the way, rob people of their lessons or
needed insight; it calms the brain so they can think more clearly about the issues and the
lessons in an experience.
So rather than the kind of interchanges where you meet the client's
misery by opening your emotional veins, as you once so poignantly stated it, you have
something to offer that is much more concrete and immediate."
