TIP: To quickly find your keyword on those pages that do come up, use your
Browser's Edit...Find on Page function in the menu bar. IMPORTANT NOTE: You are searching "pages" and
not individual listings contained in a database. If the words are anywhere on the page,
the page will be listed. Searching for "energy and medicine" may bring
up a page with phrases such as "put a lot of energy into it" and
"laughter is the best medicine." Use Advanced search to fine-tune your
results. |
|
| Check only the "Site
Search" box to search the entire site. To search other areas, uncheck the areas you do not want,
and check the areas you do want to search. You may search more than one area at a
time--just make sure "search site" is unchecked when you choose other options.
Index: On the search results
page, you will see a link called "Index." This is an index to every word found
on the website, linked to the first page it is found on. To find more instances
of the word, enter it in the "search site" box.
By default the search engine tries to locate
pages which have exact matches for all of the words entered in your search query.
If that fails, it then tries to locate pages which contain any words in your search
query. If that happens, a short message is displayed at the top of the search results
indicating this has been done.
Advanced Search: In addition, there are several
ways to modify the default search behavior.
phrase search
The search engine supports three types of phrase search.
To match an exact phrase, use quotes around the phrase
Example: "free search engine"
To match a near (within a couple of words) phrase, use
square brackets [around the words]
Example: [free search engine]
To match a far (within several words) phrase, use braces
{ around the words }
Example: {free search engine}
+ and - qualifiers
If you prepend a word with + (+word), that word is required to be on the page.
If you prepend a word with - (-word), that word is required to not be on the
page.
Example: +always -never
* wildcard
If a query word ends with a * all words on a page which start the same way as that
query word will match.
Example: beg* (= beg, begs, beggars, begging)
? wildcard
If a query word contains a ? any character will match that position.
Example: b?g (= big, beg, bog, bug, bag)
boolean search
You can use the following boolean operators in your search: AND, OR, NOT. These operators MUST
be in capital letters, and placed in parentheses.
Example: (contact AND us) OR (about AND us)
All of these techniques can be combined: +alway*
-ne??r*
